Discovering DuCard Vineyards: A Hidden Gem in Central Virginia
This summer, while exploring the beautiful countryside of France, my husband and I had a lucky encounter that would further broaden our perspective on wine options in Central Virginia. We met Scott and Karen Elliff, the friendly owners of DuCard Vineyards, just an hour north of Charlottesville in Madison County, Virginia. Little did we know, DuCard Vineyards isn't just any winery—it is the #1 rated winery in central Virginia, and for good reason!
The journey to DuCard Vineyards is a scenic delight. Nestled on the edge of Shenandoah National Park, near the renowned hiking destination Old Rag Mountain, and White Oak Canyon with its majestic waterfalls, the drive-up Route 231 is nothing short of breathtaking. Along the way, we passed cideries, breweries, and charming shops in Gordonsville, as well as jaw-dropping farm estates that just added to the beauty of the region.
Scott and Karen graciously invited us to spend an afternoon at their vineyard, promising us an insider's look into their world of wine. As we arrived, we were immediately struck by the stunning views and the refreshingly cool mountain air—a welcome change from the summer heat. Our experience began with an informative wine tasting class featuring Rosé wines from around the world. Each sip was complemented by a delicious charcuterie platter, local chocolates, and my personal favorite, locally made shortbread cookies! DuCard's own Rosé emerged as our favorite, so we left with six bottles to share with our friends back home.
The vibe at DuCard Vineyards is both relaxed and inviting. With plenty of seating offering both shade and sunshine, fresh local cheeses, warm baguettes, and an assortment of snacks. Adding to the charm, local musicians perform on select Friday and Saturday evenings, often accompanied by a food truck offering local specialties.
What truly set DuCard Vineyards apart was their dedication to providing a top-notch experience. From full-service wine flights served in elegant crystal glassware to personalized presentations and discussions about each wine by knowledgeable staff members right at our table, every detail was carefully curated to enhance our enjoyment.
Whether you're a wine connoisseur or simply seeking a serene escape into Virginia's natural beauty, DuCard Vineyards offers a perfect blend of hospitality, scenery, and exceptional wine. For those planning a visit, be sure to check their website for upcoming events and musical performances—it's an experience that promises to linger long after the last glass is emptied.
Our encounter with Scott and Karen and our time at DuCard Vineyards reminded us that sometimes the most memorable journeys are the ones we least expect. As we reflect on our summer travels, this hidden gem in central Virginia stands out as a testament to the joy of discovery and the pleasures of good company, good wine, and breathtaking views.
Did I mention they are dog friendly?!
Cheers!
